DRINK BENEFITS

Why This Drink Stands Out

There is more going on in this glass than the beautiful color. Green tea brings naturally occurring polyphenols and a gentle tea character, lemon provides fresh acidity and vitamin C, while Blue Curaçao contributes the sweet-bitter orange flavor that makes the drink so distinctive.

01

Green Tea: Light, Fresh & Full of Polyphenols

Green tea comes from the Camellia sinensis plant and is naturally rich in polyphenols called catechins, including EGCG. These compounds have antioxidant activity, while green tea also provides a modest amount of natural caffeine. The tea is brewed separately in this recipe, then chilled quickly so it keeps its fresh character without becoming the dominant flavor.

02

Lemon: Bright Citrus & Vitamin C

Fresh lemon gives this drink its sharp, lively citrus character and balances the sweetness of the sugar syrup and Curaçao. Lemon is also a natural source of vitamin C. Because this recipe uses slices and a small squeeze rather than a large quantity of juice, the main contribution here is the fresh aroma, acidity, and refreshing taste.

03

The Refreshing Combination

The magic of this drink comes from contrast: chilled green tea brings a gentle tea flavor, lemon adds acidity, and plenty of ice keeps everything crisp and cold. The result is a drink that feels bright and refreshing rather than heavy.

04

What Does Blue Curaçao Actually Taste Like?

Despite its striking blue color, Blue Curaçao does not taste like blueberries. Traditional Curaçao has a sweet, aromatic bitter-orange character. The flavor comes from the peel of the Laraha, a bitter orange associated with the Caribbean island of Curaçao, giving the drink its distinctive citrus depth.

05

How Curaçao Gets Its Flavor & Color

Traditional Curaçao begins with dried Laraha orange peel. The peel is infused with alcohol along with spices and botanicals, and traditional producers distill the mixture to extract its aromatic citrus character. The famous blue appearance comes from added coloring rather than from a naturally blue orange. Different producers use different recipes and production methods, so the exact process varies from bottle to bottle.

A note on health claims: The green tea and lemon are the ingredients with nutritional interest here. Curaçao is included primarily for its citrus flavor and color, not as a health ingredient. If you are preparing this drink for the whole family, use a non-alcoholic Blue Curaçao syrup. If using alcoholic Curaçao liqueur, the drink is for adults of legal drinking age.

Frequently asked questions

Can I make this drink without Blue Curaçao?

Yes. You can leave it out, although the color and citrus character of the drink will be different.

Can I make this drink family-friendly?

Yes. Use a non-alcoholic Blue Curaçao syrup instead of an alcoholic Blue Curaçao product.

How much green tea should I use?

Use one green tea bag and infuse it separately for about 3 minutes before chilling it with ice.

Should the green tea be chilled before adding it?

Yes. Adding a few ice cubes to the freshly infused tea chills it quickly before you pour it over the drink.
